Arameans in medicine

A platform aiming to connect and serve.

...(Page still under construction)...

Welcome to the page of Arameans in Medicine, a dedicated non-profit and politically independent organization
for networking, fellowship and charity intended to bring together Arameans(Syriacs) and all Christians originating in the Middle East who work within or study healthcare and medicine.

The idea arose a few years ago from a student with a strong will for charity seeing how well established our ethnic group had become within various sectors of the medical field. However there was a lack of networking among them. Imagine what could be achieved if they all worked together.

At the same time there was a high prevalence of health issues and an inadequate public health knowledge within the Aramean community. There was also an increasing gap between the community and health care system. This needed to change.

The vision was finally made real and on the 03-12-2023 the initiation ceremony of Arameans in Medicine was held, in Sweden. Now begins the journey.

Together we can work for a greater purpose!

About us

Arameans In Medicine(AIM) stands for peace and unity, will work for Arameans worldwide and welcomes you to join this organisation, whether you're in the medical field or not.

Let's dive into the meaning of the name Arameans In Medicine and what issues precaused the startup of the organisation. "Medicine" is defined as the science of health and healing. The World Health Organisation defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Collaboration and cooperation among various actors, organizations, and levels are crucial aspects that run through the entire healthcare system. This concerns vocations such as Biomedical Scientists, Doctors, Opticians, Social workers, Nurses, Audiologist, Speech therapists, Pharmacists, Psychologists, Dentists, Physical therapists, Dieticians, Personal Trainers, Life Coahces etc.

The "Arameans" are indigenous people of The Middle East(Mesopotamia), mentioned since over 3000 yrs ago and the biggest semitic ethnic group ever existed.

Today Arameans are dispersed in a global diaspora due to centuries of persecution in their homeland, and due to the world map drawing excluding Arameans from the right to their own lands, which they still inhabitate until today. The name Aramean is the original ethnic name of the people who lived in several city-states in Middle-East, mainly in Mesopotamia. The Arameans have at times been ruled by other nations in history such as the Assyrians and Babylonians but however remained the vast majority of the inhabitants in those areas while under foreign rule. The Arameans kept their Aramean names and culture and thus preserved their identity despite being occupied by foreign rule. The nations who occupied the Aramean lands later came to fall and seized to exist while the Aramean prevailed.

The Arameans were among the 1st nations to adopt Christianity, and it remains the biggest religion practised by them, next to Mandaeism and Islam. With the Christianisation, the name Syriac or Syrian Aramean(not to be limited to and confused with modern day Syria) gained popularity amongst Christian Arameans for the distinction from Non-Christian Arameans and remains a synonym for Christian Arameans yet today.

Fast forward a couple of thousand years, The Aramean Christians faced ecclesiastical division, adopting new names (some which already belonged to pre-existing extinct ethnic nations in history, and is not to be confused ethnically with them). Today the Arameans go under the following names: Syriac, Maronite, Chaldean, Assyrian, Melkite and Mandean

Arameans speak the language that Jesus spoke, yet their language is on the verge of extinction today. Arameans don't have a state of their own to stand up for their rights or speak up for them. Resulting in the need of organisation to protect them and help fight their extinction. Arameans don't have the same access to public health knowledge in the diaspora as in their homeland due to linguistic, cultural and socioeconomic barriers. In the homeland the barrier is unfortunatelly often poor economic status and racial discrimination. Aramean students in the Medical fields need guidance and the professionels a forum to grow.

Arameans in Medicine aims to gather medical professionals and students for the cause of helping the Aramean community world wide from a health care point of view. The organisation welcomes everyone in the community outside of the medical and health care industry to become a benefitting member and supporter, no matter occupation.

Christians of Middle East

Such as Armenian and Coptic brothers and sisters have a long shared history of being persecuted for their faith and share similar values and struggles in the Middle East. They are warlmy welcomed to join the cause and work for shared goals.

Faith, Heritage and vocation

Symbolism

What is the meaning behind the logo?

There are three main features on the logo; The Cross, The eagle and the snakes surrounding a staff.

The Cross symbolizes the christian mission and morals that lay the foundation for this organization as well as the religion of the members of the target audience.

The eagle is an ancient symbol for strength and drive, found in various Aramean sites during different epochs in Mesopotamia. It reflects AIM's dedicated work, the strength of the people that have withstood a lot of persecution and their ancient heritage.

The snakes surrounding the staff is taken from the universal logo of medicine which is thought to originate from the Greek god of healing Aesculapius. The snakes symbolise the transit from sickness to cure due to their ability to shed skin and renew themselves.

There is however a biblical meaning to the staff and snakes in AIM's logo. In the book of Exodus the Staff of Moses was used to produce water from a rock, was transformed into a snake and back, and was used at the parting of the Red Sea, thus being a tool for Gods seeming power of rescue over death. Moses raised a bronze serpent on a staff upon which the afflicted might look and be healed (Numbers 21:6-9).

Furthermore the letters AIM can be depicted on the logo, where the staff serves as the letter "I". Those are the first letters of each word in the name Arameans in Medicine, making a new word "aim". AIM strives to keep a clear and steady aim towards its goals.

The need

By Chairman Dr. Aramia Sauma

Our community faces exclusion as a minority group both in the diaspora and homeland, posing challenges in accessing timely and appropriate care.

In the diaspora, crucial public health advice often pass by our community unnoticed due to linguistic, cultural and socioeconomic barriers, exacerbating our exclusion from healthcare rights and public health education. Language barriers hinder effective communication and advocacy for healthcare needs, while unfamiliarity with the diaspora's healthcare system poses challenges in accessing timely and appropriate care.

Arameans in Medicine (AIM) aim to address these issues, working to bridge the healthcare gap and enhance public health education for our community. AIM will also support individuals in healthcare and medical fields to advance in their careers.

I support AIM, despite not working in any medical or health related industry, because health concerns us all and it is important to help combat the issues faced by our community regarding health care.                                                                                                                                                                                           - Gabriella Saliba
